A BMG poll I commissioned in 2017 found 71% of Scots backed working EU citizens staying, but 45% said those jobless for six months should go home.

In April 2017 the Sunday Express reported on a BMG poll of 1,041 Scottish voters that I commissioned, which challenged Nicola Sturgeon's claim that Scotland was more welcoming than the rest of the UK. Scots drew a clear line between work and welfare: 71 per cent backed EU citizens in work and not claiming benefits to stay, but 45 per cent thought those out of work for six months or more should return home after Brexit, and 81 per cent said the same of convicted criminals. The findings showed voters wanted an immigration policy based on what is best for the country, not the SNP's open-door approach.
