Of the Scots who expressed a view, 83 per cent said Nicola Sturgeon should put improving public services ahead of another independence referendum. That was the finding of a BMG poll of 1,009 Scots that I commissioned, run as an exclusive by the Scottish Daily Express in March 2017. Overall, 59 per cent backed public services first, with only 12 per cent disagreeing. A majority, 54 per cent, also felt Scotland's political class was more talk than action on the problems facing ordinary people, after a decade of SNP government in which schools slipped down the rankings and the NHS missed its targets.
